Who said sailing along the Athenian Riviera on a private boat is exclusive to the rich and famous. I have found an affordable way to enjoy the luxury of sailing the Athenian coast. If you have a least on day in Athens and want to take a cruise on a luxury catamaran, I have just the thing for you. A driver will pick you up from your hotel and bring you to the departure point at Agios Kosmas – Olympic Sailing Marina. When you first arrive on board you are welcomed with a refreshing drink. During this time the skipper takes you through vessel orientation and safety briefing. Once the orientation is over you are ready to get on your way. Once the catamaran is sailing out to sea you can sit back and relax while the golden sun warms your skin and you continue to enjoy unlimited cold refreshments, such as, soda, beer or Greek wine. The vessel makes about 2 to 3 stops depending on the desire of the passengers. During these stops you can freestyle swim or snorkel. The crew provides fresh towels and snorkeling masks. Another highlight of the journey is the freshly prepared meal by the crew. The meal consists of a delicious BBQ and a flavorful variety of appetizers such as fresh Greek salad with feta, slow cooked vegetables, shrimps saganaki (sautéed shrimp in tomato based sauce), and a variety of Greek dips such as Tzatziki. After the meal break the journey continues. Once upon returning to the marina, a driver will return you to your hotel.
You can choose a morning or sunset cruise when you book. Morning cruises start at 10:00am and sunset cruises start at 3:00pm. Keep in mind that Greece maintains high temperatures throughout the summer months well into early October. It does cool in the evening, but not a great deal. If you choose to take the sunset cruise don’t worry about the weather being to cool for swimming. Greeks go swimming well after that sun has gone down.
What I recommend to take with you on this cruise:
- Swimsuit
- Sandels/flip-flops (footwear that you are not afraid of getting wet and easy on and off)
- Change of clothes, just in case (simple T-shirt and shorts will do)
